D. Newton Barney donated
The Village
Library, 71 Main Street, Farmington, as a memorial to his mother Sarah
Brandegee Barney. The building, designed by Stephen Brainerd Lawrence,
was built in 1919.
There is a portrait of D. Newton Barney painted by
Rogert Brandegee, which hangs in the library's gracious reading room and
a plaque in memory of Mr.Lawrence in the library's front hall.
The Village Library served as the town's principal library until 1983, when the Main Library at 6 Monteith Drive was opened. The building has been renovated twice. The Children's wing was added in 1959. Later, the building was closed for a year. It reopened in 1984 as the renovated Village Branch Library.
On December 3, 1999, the Village Library was renamed. It officially became The Barney Library in thanksgiving to William and Harriet Barney Lidgerwood and the Barney Family for their largesse. They have served Farmington quietly, effectively and with great generosity giving of their time, talent and treasure to support and sustain that which makes Farmington unique.
